PIPER DOWN, formed some 6 years ago, is comprised of 4 guys from Abbotsford. Playing Celtic flavored folk, PIPER DOWN has performed in a variety of settings from the quiet corner of a pub to the main stage of large establishments. Blending drinking songs and sea shanties, with rich harmonies and traditional instruments, this four member Celtic group is sure to please, whether you’re enjoying a boisterous party with the crowd or a quiet pint in the corner, from quaint gathering to large outdoor events. Initially performing mostly Irish Drinking Songs, the musical repertoire has substantially expanded to include Canadian, British, and American folk songs and instrumental, and may, at any time, delve into Celtic versions of popular dance songs.

Influenced by popular Irish and Maritime folk groups, PIPER DOWN has sculpted a distinctively unique sound. A variety of instruments, strong 4 part harmonies, in addition to crowd-pleasing interaction, give PIPER DOWN unusual depth and diversity to performances.

All members have performed with a variety of other bands from rock, to folk, to pipe bands, which contributes to the variety of instruments such as guitars, banjo, base guitar, tin whistle, mandolin, bouzouki, pipes, and bodhran.

Musicians

Colin: coming from a musical family, the pipes were his first love as evident from his numerous awards and trophies. Continuing on to vocal and instrumental instruction, he later began to perform for several years with a well established British Columbia Celtic folk group which, during Expo 1986, played exclusively for Elephant and Castle at the British Pavilion in 1987, he enlisted, performed, and competed, world wide with the famous Scots Guards Pipe Band. During his duties, he often performed for the monarch, including Queen Elizabeth. Having returned to the Celtic scene, he contributes to the success of Piper Down with vocals, base guitar, penny whistle, and of course pipes.

Jim: began playing guitar at a young age and was mostly followed the rock scene. Having performed predominantly in Vancouver Nightclubs, he also toured throughout British Columbia playing rock during the late 80's and early 90's. Jim sings and plays both the guitar and mandolin.

Dave: Colin’s brother, also began by playing the pipes and later on to the penny whistle and guitar. He has played almost entirely folk and Celtic music since 1986 performing from small intimate occasions, in pubs, to large music festivals. Has backed well-known headline performers including entertainer Suzie Francis, Boogie Wooggie sensation Michael Kazhammer, and Will Miller, formerly of the Irish Rovers. Dave sings, and plays the banjo, guitar, bouzouki, penny whistle, bodhran and bass guitar.

Mike: initially playing wind instruments, his rich baritone voice was discovered and is Piper Down lead vocalist. Mike has performed with other well-known folk bands in both Canada and the United States.
